whats the cheap price range, so far ive seen 40.00usd is that cheap? im hoping for like 6-12usd per night myself, is this unheard of or a practical reality? i always found that little motel/hotels in non tourist areas in busy parts of town were extremely cheap in comparison to pensions and most hostels, but i like the idea of sleeping on the roof , ive also heard of travelers with tents camping in the pension yards, does anyone know if its real, im just trying to plan on some cheap traveling and 40.00usd per night is very expensive for me. peace

Re: cheap rooms in istanbul?
Sun, August 10, 2008 - 4:55 PMSad to say, $40 IS cheap for a room in Istanbul, and even that you have to scrounge for; the prices defintely get better the further you look away from Sultanahmet, Beyoglu, etc, but it's still pretty high. Check out Lonely Planet: Turkey; they mention some hostels where you can sleep on the roof for $15 or under. Good luck.

Re: cheap rooms in istanbul?
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 10:05 PMI can only speak for Istanbul when I say that I had not heard of these roof arrangements. But if it is true I'd still stay away from it. Any place that you find at that price is probably not safe for anyone, let alone tourists (speaking from 35 percent experience 65 percent gut). Sorry but I think you're better off seeking a hotel or a room in a place that someone is renting out...or spending more time in cities much smaller than Istanbul.
Good luck with everything, me. I hope you find what you're looking for!

Re: cheap rooms in istanbul?
Thu, October 16, 2008 - 4:07 PMThe cheapest I've gotten a room for (no bath en suite, but down the hall) is $15 near the Underground Cistern. There are deals to be found, but the guide books won't be directing you there.
Check out the travel forum at the Lonely Planet site.

Re: cheap rooms in istanbul?
Tue, February 17, 2009 - 5:38 AMone time - not so long ago
I have lived in the gutter (really) of Istanbul streets
I mean the kind of sleeping in garages - washing in public toilets and stuff
the first places I could afford after that were some cheap hotels in CAGLAYAN area
that was now 3 years ago - cost back then 15 YTL per night - no questions asked
that is about 10 USD per night (may be a bit higher now)
do not expect too much and be ready to make concessions on hygiene and so
do not leave any valuables in the room when you go out during daytime
you share the hotel with families travelling from central turkey, armenian passers by etc
peace to you too -

Re: cheap rooms in istanbul?
Tue, February 17, 2009 - 6:30 AMThere is also the Side Hotel in Sultanahmet. The stuff can be a little dodgy, esp. if you are a girl (I had to throw the receptionist off my bed and out of my room at 2am after an overseas flight because he insisted on playing his i-tunes to me and offered to massage my feet) after an overseas flight. >; P BUT it is cheap, yeah. Like 20 dollars a night or so? They have a website and you can book online. Nice view from the breakfast room on the roof, and just a few minutes from Agya Sofia , Four season hotel and the Blue Mosque.
You might also be able to get a room at soundfabrika, an Oriental music school for foreigners near Tunel. Simple, but at least there are other foregners. They too have a website.
You will have less hastle if you stay near Taksim as that's where the Turks go, less tourists, no carpet touts at all. So Cemberlitas is a good bet too, as Tania said.
What are you planning to do in Istanbul?
If it is your first time in Turkey, make it a basic assumption that people will try to rip you off, overcharge you, sell you stuff you don't need and the constant offers for massaging your shoulders and other parts of your body...be careful with your money. As I said, Taksim and Istiklal area can be less hastle and feel more normal than Sultanahmet where all the tourist attractions are. Plus most of the night life is here on Istiklal. -
